Basic Shepherds Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a simple and excellent way to use up items in your pantry. I’ve even made it with hash browns or rice when I don’t have potatoes on hand. Here is a basic shepherds pie though.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or chicken or turkey
  • ½ cup seasoning mix or your favorite seasonings
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 large potatoes or instant mashed potatoes
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 Tbs butter/margarine
  • Frozen or canned veggies (I like peas, corn & carrot mix)
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (I usually use cheddar)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Brown the ground meat and drain. Mix in seasoning and water and simmer for 15 minutes. If you’re using real potatoes, peel and cut into 1" pieces. Simmer until soft, about 10-15 minutes. Drain, mash, and add butter and milk. If you’re using instant mashed potatoes, prepare according to package. Put the meat into a 9x9 baking dish. Pour the veggies on top if using. Spread the mashed potatoes on top and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
